The two guys in the OKC band Sugar Free Allstars get funky on their latest release, Dos Machos. This comes after crashing Dr. Rocks Suburban and the departure of guitarist Mike Satawake, but the duo of Dr. Rock and Chris Wiser have healed and managed quite well on their own with the aid of a few guest musicians, including Satawake. The disc kicks off with Cover Band Boyfriend, a hilarious ode to struggling songsters and the chicks who flock to guys who dont even writhe their own songs. The track is as relevant in OKC as it is anywhere else and fits easily in a collection of OKCs Greatest Hits (which I plan to compile in the near future). Wiser, singer for the band, though not exactly a vocal gymnast, keeps the grooves coming song after song with his Hammond B3, as well as a multitude of other instruments, while drummer Rob Dr, Rock Martin occasionally joins on backing vocals. Buddhist in a Beemer, the second track on the album, couldve been written by Cake. This is a compliment, though. For whatever reason, the line, Sheep go to Heaven, goats go to Hell, keeps springing to mind. Its a great song, complete with dry wit, irony and a heap of musicianship. Produced at Bell Labs with Trent Bell, Dos Machos often sounds like Muy Machos. Just keep in mind, though, the band plays live as a duo-and quite well I might add.
