CD REVIEW-DOS MACHOS

Norman Transcript- Pop Magazine
April 16, 2004

Departing/rotating band members, recording setbacks and near-deadly disasters did a number on this dynamic duo. But, like a mighty phoenix, the Sugar Free Allstars rise from the ashes and do some spellwork of their own on the much-awaited CD, “Dos Machos!” No it’s not Spanish for “more nachos.” Loosely translated it means “two men,” which is what the former trio now is. The title is handsomely illustrated with CD cover design and artwork by Bill Richards. Since the guitarist left, the band is Chris Wiser on Hammond B3and lead vocals (as well as saxophone, flute, clarinet or any other instrument he feels inclined to play at any given time) backed by Rob “Dr. Rock” Martin on the skins. Wiser’s keen talent for pulling off bass lines on the Hammond during live shows burn like Martin’s 1988 Suburban on New Year’s Day on “Dos Machos!” Martin’s solid drumming survives the recording process, providing a solid beat throughout the CD. Wiser’s quirky, bordering on goofy lyrics, combined with his creative songwriting ability, add to the band’s endearing appeal. Those familiar with the Sugar Free Allstars will recognize this talent on favorites like “Buddhist in a Beemer” (this title explains itself), “The Way That it Goes,” “Great Big Car” and “Bender to Ender” (on the woes of spending Jesus’ birthday alone after partying too much the night before), all classic Sugar Free tunes that get folks out of their chairs and on the dance floor. The disc also features (drum roll, please) “Cornbread,” the infamous ode to the beloved yellow bread and the many ways it finds its way into-or all over-our bodies.
Although the Sugar Free Allstars are best experienced live (where else can you be continually visited by the element of surprise), Bell Labs did a nice job bringing the best of Sugar Free Allstars from the studio to disc. It should also be noted that guitars were only used on “The Way That it Goes” and “My Key.” All other sounds on the album were created by non-digital keyboards and horns. The Sugar Free Allstars play April 22 at the Deli, 309 White St. Visit the band’s web site at www.sugarfreeallstars.com.
